A Calendar of Running Opportunities Local to Derby

Introduction Physical activity has been associated with reduced rates of death and ill health from coronary heart disease, stroke, non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus,
cancer of the colon and others. However, in the UK, 70-90% of men and women are insufficiently active to achieve health benefits. Raising physical activity levels,
therefore, has the potential to favourably affect the health of considerable numbers of people. Further to this, the Government has set a target to get 70% of
the population 'active' by the year 2020.
It is against such a background that this calendar (formerly, 'A Calendar of Local Running, Cycling and Walking Opportunities') has been compiled.
Its main purpose is to help with planning; it provides, at a glance, details of running opportunities arranged chronologically throughout the year.
Choosing one of these events may seem an attractive option to those runners who wish, occasionally, to be unencumbered by route selection and navigation.
In addition, participating with larger groups may help with motivation; or, there may be a desire to raise money for charity, since some of these events
are organised by medical charities as part of their fund-raising programmes. It is hoped that the calendar will make it easier for those contemplating
running to plan their first step, and help those already engaged in regular running, maintain their active behaviour.
Most of the events are within a 20-mile radius of Derby. The list has not been prepared with the serious athlete in mind, although some very demanding
runs can be found. Rather, it is intended to help runners, across a broad age and fitness range, find opportunities to increase their activity levels;
there should be a running event here for most people. Young and inexperienced runners may find it beneficial to participate in the 'Fun Run' races of
larger events since routes are often shorter and flatter. Your participation is the most important factor and although a run may be advertised as a race,
it only becomes a race for you if you want it to be. Entering an event is easy: there is no requirement to be a member of a running club and whilst entry
to some events is free, most either charge a modest fee or, occasionally, ask you to raise sponsorship money.
The production of the calendar is a yearly undertaking and as running has increased in popularity, the number of listed events has correspondingly increased.
Included are details of over 100 local events ranging from those organised by small village committees and schools to the large city events. I would like to
thank all those who have provided constructive comments and suggested improvements for this 2010 calendar. I continue to welcome feedback about the calendar
itself, any of the events that you participate in and any not listed that you think merit inclusion. Contact details are provided
on the Clinic webpage and the clinic
receptionists will be happy to pass information to me. (Note that this does not imply that
representatives of Littleover Chiropractic Clinic are verifying your physical suitability to take part in any of the events).
Notes Many details of events taking place in autumn and winter have not been finalised by the event organisers until the end of March. Consequently,
production of the calendar is delayed until April of the current year.
Information about events taking place during January, February and March, are usually
available from the previous December; contact details can be obtained from the preceding year's calendar.
